What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session: My Go-To Tips + Color Palettes

One of the most common questions I get from families before their photo session is, “What should we wear?” And honestly — I get it! Picking outfits for the whole crew can feel a little overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

I put together this simple, family-friendly style guide to help take the stress out of planning and help you show up feeling comfortable, confident, and completely yourselves.

Choose a Color Palette

Let’s keep it simple, stylish, and true to your family’s vibe!
Pick 2-3 main colors and mix in a few neutral tones (like cream, denim, olive, tan, or gray) to tie everything together.

Classic + crisp:

navy, soft gray, white

Warm + earthy:

mustard, rust, olive, cream

Soft + natural:

dusty blue, blush, beige, white

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in identical jeans and white shirts! Choose outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy.

Little moments. Big memories.

Add Textures & Layers

Incorporate cozy knits, denim jackets, linen dresses, or chunky scarves (depending on the season). These little details add depth and interest to your photos.

Avoid Busy Logos & Loud Patterns

Simple patterns like plaid, florals, or subtle stripes can look great — just avoid bold, distracting prints or big brand logos that might date your photos.

Dress for the Season & Location

Consider where we’re shooting and what the weather might be like. Think comfy shoes for walking, layers for warmth, or lighter fabrics for summertime.

Consider Movement

Flowy dresses, loose cardigans, and items that move with you can add a beautiful sense of motion and softness to your images.

Keep Kids Comfortable

Choose outfits they can move, run, and snuggle in. Avoid anything itchy, stiff, or too tight — happy kids = happy photos.

Don’t Forget Accessories

Hats, hair bows, simple jewelry, or a favorite family quilt can personalize your session and make it feel extra special.

✨ Bonus Tip:

Lay it All Out Together

Before your session, lay out everyone’s outfits side by side. If something feels off, swap it out for a neutral or coordinating piece.
